The following comprehensive survey refers to the recent controversial Coinbase acquisition of Neutrino and was one of our most responded to surveys to date.

Key Metrics and Demographics

The results were submitted by 2,947 KYC verified participants from 102 countries and included 11,789 unique answers.

  • Total number of participants: 2,947
  • Total number of questions asked: 4
  • Total number of unique answers: 11,789
  • Total number of countries participated: 102

Questions Surveyed

The survey was based on the opinions regarding Coinbase’s recent acquisition of Neutrino - a blockchain intelligence project. The reason for the controversy was that following the purchase, several members of Neutrino’s team were revealed to have been members of the ‘Hacking Team Project.’ The ‘Hacking Team’ was an Italian IT firm who allowed their software to be used by authoritarian governments to spy on their citizens. The entire fiasco resulted in the ‘#DeleteCoinbase’ movement gaining traction.

Interesting Findings

Almost 70% of the individuals surveyed engage with Coinbase in some way, which is a vast majority. Just under half, 49.54% have an active Coinbase account, while a further 19.82% have a Coinbase account, but don’t actively use it.

The majority of people also believed Coinbase was correct in their decision to remove the employees associated with the ‘Hacking Team,’ 38.79% doing so.

20.94% disagreed with the decision, as they only fired them once their association had become public. A further 17.44% believed it was the wrong decision, regardless.

A large percentage of survey respondents, 39.29% also believed Coinbase’s acquisition was a good move. In the long run, 27.96% thought it would be a beneficial purchase. Only a fraction, 7.33% disagreed with the buy.

Despite the fairly positive sentiment towards the Neutrino acquisition, the participants were split in their future use of Coinbase or Neutrino services, with 46.66%, saying they would use their services.

19.41% said no, while 33.93% were still undecided.
